Critical illness insurance is designed to ease the financial pressures by paying a tax-free lump sum if you become seriously ill or totally disabled. You must normally survive normally for a minimum of 30 days. Unfortunately if you die of a heart attack or cancer within 30 days of diagnosis no benefirt will be payable.



What it covers
To claim on a critical illness policy you must have suffered from and received a confirmed diagnosis of one of a range of critical illnesses. We advise that you check the key facts of each policy as not all policies cover all conditions.


All policies should cover at lease 7 core conditions. Which are most cancer, coronary artery bypass, heart attack or severe heart disease, failure of a kidney, Major organ transplant, MS, multiple sclerosis and stroke (Policies can also cpay out if the policy holder is unable to preform basic tasks of day to day linking on a permanent basis (Permanent disability)



Most providers allow people to take out cover between the ages of 17 and 70. It can be for a specified number of years - as long as your mortgage, for example - or for life. Or you can just take out a policy and keep it going for as long as you choose. When you buy a policy there is often awaiting time before any claim could be considered. It varies from comopany to company but most commonly is three months
