All life insurance policies require you to make payments for a specific amount of time. In return, the company promises to pay your beneficiaries a death benefit should you die.

The options
You should first look at term insurance. This temporary form of life insurance is offered by most insurance companies.

It's based on a simple concept - the insurer guarantees to pay the policy benefits if you die within a given time. If you survive to the end of the policy's term, no benefit will be paid.

The term of the policy depends upon you and may be anything from a few years to several decades. Policies may be written on your life or on the life of yourself and your partner. Term insurance is the least expensive form of life cover.

Type of 'term' policy
There are varying versions of term insurance. With a level term policy the benefit is paid on death and remains the same throughout the term. At the end of the term the policy has no value and simply expires.

It is often bought to cover the repayment of liabilities such as a loan or a mortgage - particularly interest-only mortgages which do not reduce over the years.

With decreasing term insurance, the benefit payable on death falls each year until it is zero by the end of the policy's term. Such insurance is often used in tandem with the purchase of a repayment mortgage whose capital value falls over the mortgage term. The premiums on these policies are cheaper than for level term insurance.

Other types of life cover
Insurance companies also offer whole-of-life policies. Such policies guarantee to pay the sum assured on the death of the insured person, whenever it occurs.

Because whole-of-life insurance is not limited to a specific period, premiums are more expensive because the company eventually pays out. When you reach a specified age, you may not have to pay further premiums but your cover will continue.
