There are various circumstances in which a property can become unoccupied or empty, and many people get a shock when they find out their insurance falls invalid as a result.
There are many reasons why property become unoccupied. we often insure property where clients are working abroad or decide to take a career break. Another common reason is when a property is undergoing significant renovation, Alteration or extension. We also provide landlords insurance for property that is awaiting a occupant depending on the anticipated length of un-occupancy we may recommend a landlords or a unoccupied insurance policy.
The majority of home insurers are happy to cover unoccupied property for a short period (up to 30 days) of time with no alteration to the policy. However the policy terms and conditions may stipulate that the property remain heated. However for periods of longer than 30 days insures often dramatically reduce cover or withdraw it altogether. There are a few insurers that will continue with full cover but again these are subject to terms & conditions. The best option with an unoccupied property is to get a specialist unoccupied insurance policy.
