It is acceptable that the friend or carer is staying as a result of COVID-19. If the friend or carer continues to stay with the tenant after self-isolation / stay at home finishes, then the policy will need to be updated.

Where your property remains temporarily unoccupied due to Covid-19 you will not need to advise us and the existing level of cover will continue for a further period of 30 consecutive days from when the current Government restrictions are lifted.
You will be required to inspect the property as soon as the Government guidelines permit you and maintain logs of this activity.

Where your property becomes temporarily unoccupied due to Covid-19 you will not need to advise us of the temporary unoccupied status of the property, and the existing level of cover will continue for a period of 90 consecutive days from the date the tenant became unwell or when they were unable to travel home.

The terms of your policy remain unchanged on the understanding that you resume the disclosed renovation works within 30 days of the current Government restrictions being lifted. 

If you can safely visit the property during Government restrictions, it is recommended that you:

  • Make sure all protections fitted at the property are activated and all windows closed
  • Lock away all items that can reasonably be locked away such as lawnmowers and do not leave gardening equipment in the open
  • Isolate the mains water supply if possible at the point at which it enters the house
  • Ask a neighbour or friend nearby to oversee the property where possible subject to current restrictions and leave a set of keys so they can access the property
  • Where available set automatic timing for one or two lights in the property
  • Turn off all appliances and unplug any items that are not needed for the security of the property such as televisions
